Description
The polariscope operates on the principle of polarized light interference. When polarized light passes through a material, it experiences changes in speed and direction depending on the material’s internal stresses. This change is known as birefringence.
Polarization: Light from the source goes through the polarizer, becoming plane-polarized.
Interaction with Sample: The plane-polarized light interacts with the sample. Areas of stress in the sample cause variations in the light’s phase, resulting in birefringence.
Investigation: The analyzer, arranged opposite to the polarizer, channels the light arising out of the example. The interference between light waves that have traveled through different parts of the stressed material creates a pattern of light and dark fringes.
Observation: These fringes are observed on the viewing screen or captured by a detector, revealing the stress distribution within the material.
